NSW: Telstra to connect Tamarama in US-Aust cable plan

Telstra says a nine-thousand kilometre cable to be laid from Sydney to Hawaii will
increase internet traffic between Australia and the US.

But it won't make broadband in Australia cheaper.

The first length of Telstra's fibre cable is scheduled to be laid today .. a sight
likely to grab the attention of surfers at Sydney's Tamarama Beach.

The French vessel Ile De Sein will be moored off the beach .. making the first connection
of the link that will eventually run along the Pacific Ocean floor and re-emerge at Hawaii's
Keawaula Beach.

The operation will be finished by the end of the year.
